Air traffic controllers are people trained to maintain the safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic in the global air traffic control system. The position of air traffic controller is one that requires highly specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities. Controllers apply separation rules to keep aircraft at a safe distance from each other in their area of responsibility and move all aircraft safely and efficiently through their assigned sector of airspace, as well as on the ground.

It’s not easy to become ATC. It is highly paid job at developed countries. Every country has own basic criteria for taking ATC’s training. Our neighbor country India has the criteria that student from science and engineering can only apply for training. In our contest, people from every faculties can apply who score at least 50 per at bachelors degree. Once Individual is selected for training he has to score more than 80 per marks for each subject. After successfully completion of training a controller can apply for a job. Every ATC should have license for providing services. Every ATC will have renewal and rating examination each year. In Nepalese context this is only one profession who need license for doing job. It is not easy to receive license. After medical examination from authorized Doctor, controller should go for written and simulation examination. Training and licensing are critical for achievement of competency.

ATC, Licensing, Aerodrome Control and AFIS Course is provided by Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal through CAAN Academy. CAAN Academy is located in Sanothimi, Bhaktapur. To pursue the profession as Air Traffic Controller in NEPAL one needs to obtain the certification. The course is offered periodically with limited seats. In total, the course is overall of 33 weeks. If you come from the privilege group there is around 49% seat allocated. To get enrolled in the course you need to have Bachelors degree certificate in IT, Management or Engineering with minimum score of CGPA 2.5 with English language Proficiency certification provided by TU with minimum score of Grade-B. If someone have done bachelors degree from foreign universities they need to evaluate the proficiency through TU. Age bar to get enrolled is 21 to not exceeding 27 years old. The enrolment procedure contains written exam and interview. One additional requirement is candidate must attach the ATC licensing Class III medical Report obtained from the Health authority assigned by CAAN. Go to education page
