Kathmandu Forestry College (KAFCOL) was established in 2005 as an institution affiliated to Tribhuvan University (TU). The college is the first academic institution in Kathmandu valley that has been entrusted by TU to run B.Sc. forestry courses and contribute to the production of forestry graduates in Nepal. The college currently runs a four year B.Sc. forestry as well as Diploma in forestry (Ranger) courses. This institution is managed and run jointly by the Nepal Agroforestry Foundation (a National NGO working in the promotion of Community Agroforestry and Community forestry in Nepal and a group of professionals with work experience in forestry and natural resources management (NRM). At KAFCOL, we believe in providing high quality research training and education so that our graduates are able to compete internationally. In the days to come, KAFCOL aims to develop itself as a center of excellence in South Asia for teaching and research in forestry and natural resources management.
The courses at KAFCOL are taught in such a way that the young minds with scientific bent acquire the requisite skills and knowledge for pursuing a career of their choice. At a time when the global community puts environmental issues very high on the agenda of achieving good health for mother earth and its inhabitants, we feel that our courses prepare young scientists who will be contribution to the agenda in various capacities—as good citizens, policy makers, planners, researchers and activists. The first batch of 23 students enrolled at KAFCOL for the B.Sc. course has graduated in 2010. We feel proud to report that among all the students from various colleges who passed the B.Sc. forestry exams conducted by TU in 2010, two students from KAFCOL itself stood first and second highest among all students. This is an excellent start for KAFCOL towards its march for building itself into a centre for excellence in forestry education.
