Being a Thanka Painter means having basic knowledge and the tasks of painting. It also means that the basic art form of Thanka history is preserved. It has festive, medical as well as spiritual information. Renovation of traditional art-form is also a big part of the Thanka painter.
Thanka is a Tibetan Buddhist and Newari painting on cotton, or silk appliqué, usually depicting a Buddhist deity, scene, or mandala. Aspiring Thanka artists must spend years studying the iconographic grids and proportions of different deities and then master the technique of mixing and applying mineral pigments.
